It’s been a busy week on the Mcbarron Wood Grad scheme. Our General Manager interviewed a number of applicants for a vacant position in our department. Seeing Graduates full of enthusiasm and eager to enter the recruitment industry at McBarron Wood made me examine what motivated me to join the Grad Scheme and what kind of person you have to be to succeed in the role.
Be under no illusion, being a Recruitment Consult at McBarron Wood is very challenging, gruelling and very dispiriting when the market is quiet and things are not going your way.
The type of character required to be successful at McBarron Wood must be prepared for this and deal with that aspect of the role. On the flip side it can come with much reward; you actually deal with people everyday giving you a great insight into what is really important to people when they’re job-hunting. You can earn excellent commission, allowing you a salary not possible in other industries at a very young age; making a deal gives you a good buzz and sense of fulfilment when a candidate is truly grateful for your assistance in finding a new role. Therefore if you are considering going into a career in Recruitment with McBarron Wood, take note of the above. Really have a look at yourself and ask yourself if it is really what you want to do, then assess whether you have the right attributes to succeed. To be a successful consultant, you need determination, the ability to listen, resilience, honesty, pro-activity, monetary drive and competitiveness.

McBarron Wood Graduate Scheme end of another week…
Friday, October 22nd, 2010Graduate Recruitment Continued…
Friday, October 15th, 2010During my second month on the McBarron Wood Grad Scheme I’ve been cutting my teeth in the London market and learning to build warm relationships with senior clients and candidates.
I’ve come to realise that building my market is all about cultivating relationships through an open and friendly approach which engages trust in both parties. By thoroughly qualifying my candidates on behalf of the clients I am working for has ensured that companies from a broad spectrum of industries have come back to McBarron Wood for repeat business.
The cut and thrust of the London market has presented me with new challenges ranging from exacting questioning from MDs to side stepping over zealous gatekeepers! Such things have required a quick mind, spontaneity and ready enthusiasm. With the helpful guidance from my manager, the skills I’ve acquired to deal with this month’s challenges will serve me well over my career.
First Month on the McBarron Wood Grad Scheme
Friday, October 8th, 2010My first month at McBarron Wood has been hectic. The learning curve has been steep and the pressure to make my first placement has been building!
As a new arrival, I’ve spent the majority of my time building up my desk – that is – contacting clients and getting some new business on my inventory. I’ve also been talking to many high quality candidates; finding out how Accounting and Finance works and what motivates people when they’re looking for a new job. I’ve been lucky enough to work directly alongside the General Manager Scott Baker which meant that I’ve picked up things that I probably would have missed otherwise.
I’ve learnt a great deal in the past 4 weeks! From how to approach senior clients in Accountancy to the nuts and bolts of closing a deal. Indeed, on the very last day of my first month, I placed a candidate in a management role.
It was a great feeling to close my first deal after a lengthy process of searching, interviewing and negotiation.
I hope the next month is as lucrative!

Joining McBarron Wood Grad Scheme
Why did I choose McBarron Wood to further my Career as a Recruitment Consultant? What makes it such a satisfying profession?
I have been interested and challenged.
Even though I have only been here a relatively short time, I know this is not going to be a quick six months, but a long term career.
What do we do? We help people. We help Candidates. We help Clients.
We are not social workers! Don’t be confused. You must be a hard-nosed, practical effective business person and well educated salesman to maximise income in this industry. But you can
get what you want by helping other people get what they want.
